8 Books About Self-Love To Transform Your Mental Health

This post is all about self-love books and the best books on self-compassion! Learn to be your own best friend to live a happier, healthier life.

It should come as no surprise that I have a deep love for books and self-improvement.

And although I’m a huge advocate for self-love, I am also incredibly hard on myself more often than not. You probably are too.

We live in a world where we are constantly striving for more and more. We look around and see people our own age achieving remarkable things.
So if you struggle with self-love (we all do sometimes!), here are the best books on learning to love yourself.

The Best Books On Self Compassion and Self Acceptance

Before we dive right in, I want to say that the absolute best books on self love and compassion won’t do anything for you if you aren’t receptive.

Reading a book is a great thing, but if you read 87 Self-Help books and don’t practice what they preach, you won’t get anywhere. It is like going to school and not doing the homework.

Yes, you can learn by simply listening to your teacher, but until you try it yourself and put it to practice, you won’t fully grasp a concept and get anywhere.

Even if some of the suggestions in these books seem silly or get you out of your comfort zone, try it! Wonderful things happen when you put yourself out there.

THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK –  MARK MANSON

This book makes it on basically every list I’ve made regarding self-help, and for good reason. It’s simply one of the best selling books on how to love yourself!

There are many things in life you don’t need to pay attention to or stress out about. Mark makes a great case for reserving our F*cks for the things that really matter. Life isn’t as complicated as we think it is, most of our problems and stress originates from giving a f*ck about the wrong things.

If you go through life giving f*cks about all the wrong things, you will likely become stressed and unhappy. Focusing in on the things that truly matter (yourself, your loved ones, etc) and ignoring all the other garbage flying around (having a nice car, IG likes, what Betty said, etc.) will automatically make you a happier, more compassionate version of yourself.

The Gifts Of Imperfection: Let Go Of Who You Think You’re Supposed To Be and Embrace Who You Are – Brene Brown

Brene Brown gives 10 powerful insights on the power of living authentically, from a place of worthiness. You will have many ‘Ah-Ha!’ moments while reading this book.

If you are one that struggles with who you are and who you think you should be, this might be the book for you. A lot of the time, we think we should be a certain person because ‘that’s what society wants us to be.’

But in all honesty, society doesn’t care. We are free to be who we want and we have nothing to prove.

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom – Don Miguel Ruiz

This is one of the first self-help books I’ve read and I constantly go back to it. Its a quick read, you can probably get through it, front-to-back, in one sitting.

This book talks about self-limiting beliefs that hold you back. The lessons seems simple but they are deep. When put to practice, they are life-changing.

This book has taught me how to speak to myself without being judgmental. It felt like sitting with a kind and loving friend for a couple of hours and has left me with much to think about for years to come.

How To Stop Feeling Like Shit – Andrea Owen

Life has many ups and downs, and this book can help you navigate it all. Whether your life is great and you don’t think you need this book, or you’re going through a rough patch, the tools and techniques in this book will help you feel happy and grateful regardless of your exterior circumstances.

If you have been feeling a little scattered, and don’t quite know why, you should pick this one up. Andrea Owen does a great job of calling out certain thought patterns and negative self talk that sets us back and has us feeling like sh*t.

Madly In Love With ME: The Daring Adventure of Becoming Your Own Bestfriend – Christine Arylo

Remember hearing ‘if you don’t love yourself, you won’t be able to love anyone else?’ That’s basically the bread and butter of this book.

Christine gets straight to the point offering a lot of food for thought with exercises you can try yourself to drive it home.

The book explores 10 branches of self love in a practical and fun way. You will be laughing and loving a whole lot throughout the chapters, never wanting it to end.

It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way – Lysa TerKeurst

Was this your plan? Have a successful career, loving partner, beautiful home, and travel the world all by your 30th birthday?

It looks very similar to what my life plan was, but as the amazing Thomas Rhett said “You make plans, and you hear God laughing.”

And although we know things don’t go to plan and we have to be flexible with our life, we still sometimes feel like a failure if we don’t achieve our goals by a self-imposed deadline.

This is an amazing book for when life throws you a curveball. It’s real without being cynical, heartbreaking without being hopeless, and very much relatable for any stage in your life.

Choosing ME Before WE: Every Womans Guide To Life and Love – Christine Arylo

Another Christine Arlyo book! I relate very much to her words and wisdom and just had to recommend another one of her books.

This book goes deeper into valuing ourselves so we can find the loving, nurturing relationships that we want, instead of the ones we keep finding ourselves in.

It’s likely a couple of your previous relationships have failed because of a lack of self-love (either your own or your partners). This book will have you looking into the deepest part of yourself and perhaps changing the trajectory your life is on.

If you find yourself in the same relationships (although the friends and partners may change), with the same struggles and heartaches, this book is for you.

Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic For A Simpler, More Soulful Way Of Living – Shauna Niequist

Lately, being ‘busy’ is seen as a good thing. When in actuality, ‘busy’ can be quite negative on our mental health. It leaves you feeling tired, frazzled, and overwhelmed.

Shauna writes a raw and real book that felt like it reached me at the perfect time in my life.

I used to value myself based on how well my work was going, instead of valuing myself simply because I am a whole, loving person who deserves it. When you focus more on the present and not where you are in life and where you want to be, you release yourself from the prison you’ve created.
